The
21st international biennial meetings of the International |Society for
the Study of Behavioural Development (ISSBD) will be hosted by the University
of Zambia (UNZA) 18 - 22 July 2010 Lusaka Zambia. This meeting will be
an important milestone in the African program that ISSBD started at the
beginning of the 1990’s. Several workshops have been organized in
Africa in different countries such as Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Namibia,
and Zambia. As the President of ISSBD, I attended the first four workshops and greatly enjoyed them. They opened my eyes to see advancements and problems in developing countries. I learnt to respect African researchers, many of them educated in world’s best universities in France, U.K., USA, Canada, and elsewhere, as experts in their own cultural phenomena. I also realized an urgent need for support for communication among researchers from different African countries as well as for their communication with researchers in the rest of the world. I have great memories from our workshop in Lusaka, Zambia in 1996. On the human level, I encountered the intangible aspects of feeling welcome, safe and comfortable during my stay. A conference center, decent hotels, interesting shops, and friendly atmosphere combined with Zambian nature and culture create memorable circumstances for the meetings in Lusaka. Lea Pulkkinen |
